The Porthaul Grain Storage Facility is a large-scale, fire-isolated building purpose-designed for high-capacity grain storage. The project’s complexity lies in its scale and structural demands, requiring innovative design solutions to ensure strength, functionality, and long-term durability.
Spanning 50 metres wide by 85 metres long, the facility features a large portal frame with open-web trusses, allowing for unobstructed internal space and efficient grain handling operations. The reverse frame design positions the steel columns on the exterior, with wall cladding installed internally—enabling grain to be stored right up to the building’s perimeter walls. The lower 4 metres of the structure are constructed from reinforced concrete tilt panels, providing robust support for the grain’s lateral pressure.
To enhance natural lighting, clear roof sheeting is incorporated in each bay, reducing the need for artificial illumination during daytime operations. The steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) floor slab delivers superior load-bearing capacity, making it ideal for heavy machinery, B-double trucks, and other industrial equipment.
Access and functionality are optimised with four large sliding panel doors, creating wide openings for efficient vehicle and equipment movement. Each structural column is supported by a dedicated pier foundation, ensuring stability and strength across the expansive footprint.
This project exemplifies smart industrial design—balancing durability, efficiency, and practicality to meet the demanding needs of modern grain storage and logistics.
